Difference between Mineral, Rocks & Gemstones
- Minerals
Minerals are mostly found in the earth surfaces that contain lava flows or in water located in caverns under the sea. There are upwards of 4,000 minerals within the earth and each one has a specific crystal structure (a crystal forms under ideal conditions and it is these conditions that contribute to its healing properties). Each mineral has a distinct classification that ranges from color, luster, tenacity, hardness, and fracture. They are usually mined for the elements they contain however some are mined strictly for their appearance.
Minerals are a naturally occurring substance that has definite physical properties and chemical composition. The are crystals that make up different types of rocks and gemstones.
- Rocks
Rocks are made up of one or more minerals. They form the earth and come in all sizes and shapes. Traditionally rocks were not polished with the exception or Lapis Lazuli, however it is now becoming popular to polish them for healing stones.
- Gemstones
Gemstones are valuable rocks and minerals that are measured by their hardness, size, and rarity. Unpolished they look ordinary and yet when polished they have a unique brilliance and color. Gemstones are put into to categories of precious or semi precious gemstones. Some precious gemstones include diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire and some semiprecious gemstones include amethyst, garnet, citrine, turquoise, and opal.
